How to Store Wines and Spirits: Tips & Tricks

Wines and spirits need to be stored properly, to ensure they maintain their quality and flavour over time. This is highly essential, and important.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to store Wines and spirits.

Temperature Control:

● Wines: Wines should be stored at a consistent temperature, between 45°F (7°C) and 65°F (18°C). One thing to avoid is temperature fluctuations, and they can damage the wine.

● Spirits: Spirits generally are more robust, and can withstand a wider range of temperatures. It’s however advisable to store between 55°F (13°C) and 70°F (21°C).

Light Exposure:

■ Wines: Keep wines away from direct sunlight or any strong artificial light sources. The quality of wines can be degraded by UV rays, thus leading to premature ageing.

■ Spirits: Although spirits are less sensitive to light exposure, it’s advisable to store them in a dark place. This helps maintain the colour and prevent any potential flavour changes.

Humidity Levels:

● Wines: A relative humidity level of around 70% should be maintained to prevent corks from drying out. Dry corks can lead to oxidation and spoilage. Also, if humidity is too high, it could cause mold growth, so aim for a moderate level.

● Spirits: The way humidity affects spirits is not the same as wine. However, extreme humidity can lead to damaged labels and corrode closures, so it’s best to store in a controlled environment.

Bottle positioning:

● Wines: Wine bottles should be stored horizontally to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out. A dry cork can allow air to enter the bottle, and cause spoilage.

● Spirits: Spirits can be stored either upright or horizontally. Spirits usually have a high alcohol content, so the liquid itself acts as a sealant, thus preventing oxidation.

Storage location:

● Wines: For wine storage, choose a cool, dark and vibration-free area. Avoid storing wines either in the kitchen, or near appliances that generate heat or vibrations. These factors can have a negative impact on the wines’ quality.

● Spirits: Store spirits in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, it’s very similar to wines. Vibration is less of a concern and impact for spirits.

Categorization and Organization:

● Wines: Wines should be organised by type (red, white rosè), region or ageing potential. You should have and keep a record or inventory of your collection, noting the purchase date, producer and vintage.

● Spirits: Group spirits by type (whiskey, rum, vodka), or you categorise them based on personal preference. Spirits can also be organised alphabetically or by country of origin.

You should note that there are general guidelines, and there are specific Wines or spirits that may have unique storage systems. Refer to the recommendations provided by the producer, or contact a professional if you’re in doubt about the storage conditions for a bottle.
